April 28, 2010 isn’t, as one might assume, a mattress company. Instead it’s a website which allows people to ask other people who sign up for an account anonymous questions which they agree to answer. Only on the internet, hey?, you will note, also bears the mysterious dot-me country code. Turns out .me denotes Montenegro. It’s kind of interesting reading.

Anyway, Nerd Hurdles uses as a promotional tool. Or, more accurately, we attempt to use it as promotional tool. Our account mostly gets ignored. But we have been asked some interesting questions. A sample of which are reproduced for your pleasure below.

Do you think Nerd Hurdling should be an event in the Olympic Games? by megamatt

Jakob: No. That would be absurd. Nerd Curling though, definitely. Also Nerd Pommel Horse. Any nerd who can support the weight of a gyrating, steroid-happy gymnast deserves a medal.

Do you believe there’s intelligent life on other planets?

Mandi : I don’t believe in intelligent life on this planet. Other than The Banana.

Jakob: Sure. Why not. The Universe is a pretty big place. What being infinite and all. But if they have monster trucks, I hope they never visit Earth.

Coming To Terms (February 2010)

March 4, 2010

Maybe it’s just me but either crazier people are finding the Hurdled Nerd via Google, or people are just getting crazier in general. Here’s a sample of the best search terms of the last month.

  • zombie yawning — You wanted pictures of tired zombies? Zombies bored with the malaise of their own existence? Go here.
  • whats right and wrong — We’re not qualified to tell you the answer. But the internet isn’t where you should be looking for it.
  • i can do all things through him who strengthens me — I want to know which post connected this search term to our blog. So I can delete it.
  • zombie kind — Compassionate zombies or makes and models of the walking dead? Be more specific in your search terms.
  • wow people — As in “wow, people”? Or World of Warcraft players? I guess “like, wow, WoW people” makes sense.
  • world map of rock music listeners — We don’t have it. But I’d like to see it.
  • slash+”star trek” — Most people have a character preferences, but I guess any Trek slash will do for them.
  • metaphysical anime — Oh my goddess, isn’t all anime metaphysical in some way?
  • starbase 66 karen picture — Why do people keep getting to our blog when they search for Karen?
  • march & beer — We gave up beer for Lent.
  • stereotypes sometimes they just play the — same role over and over?
  • how to draw tentacle anime — No.
  • neil tennant fuck — Yes.
  • nerd publisher — I hope they found one. And lets me know who they are. I got a book to flog.
  • meat jesus — Yay! Someone searched for Baby Meat Jesus!
  • baby meat — Ew… for the wrong reasons.
  • star wars baby mobile death star — Sounds like something awesome and deadly a cat would drive.
  • “you can’t take this guy from me” — Glad we’re not the only ones who mis-hear that lyric.
  • christian youth forum — Boy did you come to the wrong place.
  • starbase 66 karen’s
  • twilight should end — We agree.
  • coin collecting whores — Hookers who get paid in loonies or old men who’ll do anything for a silver denier.
  • annoyed book — The book is annoyed? The book is about an annoyed character? The book makes the reader annoyed? Who can say? I’m annoyed.
  • elementary stories about comedy of a nerd — We only have advanced stories about comedy of a nerd.
  • “hoody fighter” jakob — I can’t believe someone other than myself has ever searched for this.
  • blocks fit — Yes. Yes, they do. Like Lego.
  • anakin and perseus — Is this some kind of bizarre cross-franchise slash?

First fan-art and now fan-mixes. These are two glorious remixes of Nerd Hurdles by Mr. Brad Thornton of the UK. The first is strange, the second is just plain absurd. In the best sense of both adjectives. Somewhat like us. Fan mixes? What’s next?

Hurdled Nerds:

So I Married a Nerd Hurdle:

More of Brad’s music here.

Nerd Hurdles were present at the Toronto location of the controversial, overhyped, mega-letdown, nerd-burn that was the latest Flynn Lives event. It was hard to tell if the new Tron Legacy trailer was any good through all the geek wrath and nerd ire. You’ll hear all about it in Episode 55.

But if you want to read what Jakob wrote about it right now, you have to go to that baddass website

Flynn Lives!

February 25, 2010

The makers of Tron 2 are raising the bar for nerdgasmic marketing events. Check out the video in the “Flynn Lives Meet-up” post for proof. I think the line “I’ve been waiting since I was 12 to play Space Paranoids and there it was” says it all. These guys know their target demographic like the back of their hand.

At 4pm EST today, tickets are being released through the Flynn Lives site for some kind of secretive IMAX pre-screening events worldwide. Nerds in the know will be on that.

Worse Than Fanfic?

February 24, 2010

Something has been brought to our attention which is actually a step below mary-sue fanfic. It’s ghostwritten mary-sue fanfic and it comes from But the horror doesn’t stop there. They’re not even proper mary-sues! They’re mary-sues set in faux-fandoms!

For obvious copyright reasons they can’t just plop you into Bella’s spot in Twilight, but there seems to be a variety of Twilightesque titles at the moment. There’s also Pirates of the Carribeanesque titles and something that appears to be trying to suggest Star Trek. Vaguely.

Near as we can tell, there’s a questionnaire you fill out from which the characters’ names, hair and eye colour are changed to fit the IRL versions of you and your friends. Kind of like Mad-Libs, only more gingy.

Book By You does have “kids book” options and those could conceivably be really great gifts for children. Really, this sounds like an idea that would be great applied to Choose Your Own Adventures. That could actually be a lot of fun.

But the thought of a 35-year-old woman having herself inserted—by someone else or, possibly, a computer—into a pre-written pirate romance hurts the soul in a previously uncharted way. It’s stuff like this that makes the Cylons hate us.

Igor and Banantastic!

February 17, 2010

Someone said fanart is worse than fanfic, but we disagree. This is the best Valenwhine’s gift ever!

So great, I couldn’t help making a video out of it!

What would Barbara Adams do?

February 16, 2010

If Barbara Adams were Camille, she’d buy a T-shirt from the Nerd Hurdles store and then blog about it.

iGor™ sneak peek leak!

February 10, 2010

We at The Hurdled Nerd are pretty stoked to get the first photo of the iGor™, the highly anticipated new lifestyle device from the Bananacorporation.

“The iGor™ is not just about goring eyeballs. Need to find a cadaver? Need to keep track of your masters’ mealtimes? Want to find mad scientist movies to download? There’s an app for that. And more!”

Or so says a draft of the press-release from the Banana corporation. Will the iGor™ live up to the hype? It’s hard to say for sure just yet. But if the above photo is anything to go on, we think the iPad will have some serious competition in the lifestyle device market this spring.
