EPISODE 100 – Nerd Hurdles vs. Starbase 66

It was bound to come down to this eventually. That’s right… Episode 100!

What better excuse to decide the question on everyone’s lips: Nerd Hurdles and Starbase 66… Which podcast is the bigger hurdle?

Klingon Commander, Kennedy “Kenny G Gordon storms the Hurdle Hut with his bat’leth to defend the Starbase’s honour. Jakob and Mandi use their Kirk-Fu against him.

Three nerds enter, three nerds, uh, leave. Pretty much unscathed. The Hurdle Hut isn’t exactly Thunderdome.

    Congrats on 100 episodes!

I used to hate Igor and the Banana, finding them annoying. However, since they’ve become their own little feature at the end of the podcast, my opinion has flipped entirely. In a skit where it’s just the two of them, I find the way they play off each other hilarious. I think what turned me off to them was their ‘interaction’ with your actual selves. I don’t think they can pull off their own show, though. The five to ten minutes at the end of an episode feels like a bonus feature and I think that’s where they belong.

Here’s to the hurdles that come!

Thanks for the feedback. Funny, I never thought about how they might be less annoying “by themselves” rather than with Mandi and I present.

For the record, for anyone who’s curious, if they did have their own show, it’d only be 10-15 minutes long and come out every other week or so.

  2. TorontoKev says:

I likes the Igor and Banana as a “now for something completely different” at the end of the show.

As for theme tunes, I gotta say the first one wins. The new one… in my ears, overuses the “whistle of weirdness” which comes at the end of “nerd out”. THe first one had an excellent 8 bit Sidplayer vibe that was tight.

    • nerdhurdles says:

I was going to quip the “whistle of weirdness” sounds like something from Dr. Who (for when your sonic screwdriver just doesn’t suit the job). Then I realized, it really does sound like something from Dr. Who, which was my intention.

  3. I clicked Yes their own show, but I’m with Toronto Kev. Something different at the end…..if anyone doesn’t like that section, they can whizz on.

  4. Janet says:

I like the new music. Please don’t change it! The old one was good too, but I like this new one better.

  5. Tony Pucci says:

I used to think I&B should have their own show, just cuz I want MORE of their brand of love in my life. But now? It’s up to you two, J&M. Follow your (merkin) muse.

As for the theme song, I can understand from an artistic view that you wanted to mix it up, Jakob. Keep it fresh. It seems smoother…and by that I mean, I often put a few episodes on repeat and go to bed (yeah, I love your show that much!). The old theme song would often wake me up, it was tooooo poppy!

  6. Kennedy says:

I think the theme song should be Funky Cold Medina.

  7. Camille says:

I voted a couple of times (I like to sway polls:). I loved the old theme song (a classic), but the new one is equally well done.

That said, Jakob, did you play that 20 minute extended version of the song at the end of the episode so everyone could understand how tired your were of hearing it? I believe your words were “I can’t listen to that anymore”…I feel your pain brother. If the answer is yes… well done sir, mission complete. Stick with the new one and change it as often as you like.

And just to go on the public record, I’m not a fan of Igor and that banana. Yes, I said, *that* banana.

  8. tjstein says:

Love the show so much! Like some of the others, I prefer Igor & Banana at the end of the show. I probably wouldn’t download a podcast of just them on it though.

And go with whatever music you prefer, if I don’t like it, I can skip it.

  9. I think listener submitted theme tunes would be a cool idea. Not that I have any idea how to make one myself- but I bet there are lots listeners who do =) Then Jacob would never have to get sick of one.

    • nerdhurdles says:

That would certainly be a boon for listener involvement. But I am selfishly protective for any oportunity for me to be creative in the show. I’m not sure I’m a good enough person to let go of that much control. ;P

Oh and people should take a gander Heather’s blog about comics for girls (or lack there of).

  10. Chris says:

I must confess to a soft spot to the old theme, although the new one has its charms. Maybe you can use both. Flip a coin each week to decide which one to use, so that it’s always a little surprise.

    I’m easily amused, I guess.

As for I & B, again, an amusing little bit at the end (or in the middle, I’m not picky) would be a fun interlude. They do have a certain…charm, I guess you’d say. It would be a pity to lose them entirely, even to their own show.

Interesting, another 10 votes on each poll but the percentages remain the same. That’s consistency.
